Behind the ALVN persona
Throughout our conversation at Semua House, ALVN gradually sheds the expectations that have accumulated around him. “I think people see the actor and the singer first,” he says. “But Alvin is just an ordinary man, just like anyone else out there, who happens to have a big dream.”
It is not false modesty, but a surprisingly practical assessment of a career that often appears far more glamorous from the outside than it feels from within.
“I’d probably say I’m pretty lucky to have a career like this. But at the end of the day, I’m still just like any other person. Sometimes I feel lost. Sometimes I wonder if I should continue doing this, or what the future holds.”
Entertainment has always sold certainty. The public rarely sees hesitation because confidence photographs better. ALVN, however, speaks openly about uncertainty, because he considers it inevitable.
For him, that openness has become central to his second act. Rather than presenting himself as someone with all the answers, he hopes audiences recognize something much simpler.
“I hope Alvin, as a person, can inspire people not to be afraid to chase their dreams.”
Ten years later, still dreaming
It is a philosophy shaped by experience. Having spent more than ten years in the entertainment industry, ALVN has had enough distance to examine the person who first walked into it.
“I was very naive, to be honest,” he admits with a laugh. “I used to think of the world as a very big, kind and wonderful place.” Part of him still believes that, but experience has introduced a more realistic perspective.
“Now I try not to care too much about what other people think. I just focus on doing the things that I like, spending time with the people I love, and trying my very best to be kind to anyone I meet.”
Growing older, he says, has been about understanding who he already was. “I think growing up has taught me to understand myself better and to be more comfortable with who I am,” he says.
A stronger sense of self has also made his career increasingly difficult to define.
No career blueprint required

“My principle in life is simple,” he says. “If I never try something, I’ll never really know whether I like it or not.” It’s the philosophy that ultimately led him to ALVN.
The decision to release music under a slightly altered name was not driven by marketing trends or a desire to erase his past. If anything, it was an attempt to finally align his public identity with his private one.
“Before I changed my name to ALVN, I felt like I had a story to tell.”
From performing stories to writing them
For much of his earlier recording career, ALVN was not deeply involved in writing his own material. Conversations with his previous label eventually turned toward creating a new identity. Different stage names were suggested, many designed to feel younger or more current.
As ALVN, music has become noticeably more autobiographical. Rather than interpreting songs written for him, he now treats songwriting as an extension of his own experiences.
“As an actor, people know me through the roles and characters I’m given. But with music, when I write my own stories, I feel like I can relate more directly to people.”
His explanation for why songwriting matters is perhaps the clearest insight into his personality: “I don’t really talk to people that much,” he says with a smile. “I’m an introvert. So writing my own songs feels like my own form of journaling.”
Not every feeling arrives loudly, and ALVN has found a language for those that don’t. His recent songs dwell in the space between heartbreak and happiness, written with an understanding of people who rarely say everything they feel. He knows that silence firsthand.
Breaking out of the boy-next-door role
While music has become more vulnerable, his ambitions as an actor are moving in the opposite direction. For years, ALVN has been closely associated with romance. It is the role audiences instinctively imagine him playing, and the industry has been more than willing to reinforce that image. He understands why.
“A lot of times, when people look at me, they immediately associate me with love stories or the boy-next-door character.” But he is already preparing for something different.
Training for Hyrox has become part of that process, not simply as a fitness goal but as a way of physically reshaping how casting directors might see him. “Hopefully, people can see a more masculine side of me and realize that I can pull off different kinds of roles,” he remarks.
Dressed for his own story
Fashion, too, has become part of that evolution. Initially, ALVN’s relationship with style was largely practical. Stylists dressed him for premieres and campaigns, while brands gradually welcomed him into their orbit. Over time, however, fashion stopped feeling like another professional obligation.
“I realized that fashion isn’t really about how someone tells you to dress. It’s more about how you want to dress and what you want to express”

Growing up in Penang before relocating alone to Kuala Lumpur forced ALVN to become independent at an early stage of his career. Without industry connections or an established support system, he had little choice but to adapt quickly.
Living in Kuala Lumpur became an education beyond entertainment. He learned to navigate adulthood independently while also becoming fluent in Cantonese, strengthening his Bahasa Malaysia and improving his English.
“I didn’t know anybody. I had to force myself to learn everything on my own. It was about being brave and not being afraid to try something new.”
Malaysia, on the road
Those Malaysian roots remain central to how he views success internationally. As Southeast Asian creatives continue gaining global visibility, ALVN believes Malaysia still has many stories waiting to be told.
“You’d be surprised by how many people don’t really know what Malaysia looks or feels like,” he says. Whenever he travels, he often finds himself becoming an unofficial ambassador. Sometimes he even scrolls through photographs on his phone rather than relying on internet searches. “I think it’s better to show the real Malaysia.”
Nothing about ALVN has unfolded overnight. Every chapter has been built gradually, each one expanding on the last rather than replacing it.
The actor is chasing roles that challenge the image audiences have long associated with him, trading familiar romantic leads for characters with sharper edges and greater complexity.
The musician, now performing as ALVN, has finally found a creative language that feels unmistakably his own, using songwriting as a way to articulate the thoughts he rarely says aloud.
Fashion has evolved beyond red carpets and front-row appearances into another extension of that storytelling, allowing him to express different versions of himself without uttering a word.
And as his career continues to expand across Southeast Asia and beyond, the Malaysian artist remains just as committed to representing home, carrying the country’s culture into every room he enters.
The next chapter is his to write
That throughline, more than any individual project, is what defines this next chapter. It isn’t simply about reaching a wider audience or taking on bigger opportunities, but about building a career that feels increasingly authentic with every step, shaped by curiosity rather than convention and by a willingness to keep evolving rather than settling into expectations.
So when asked how he hopes people will remember him decades from now, ALVN doesn’t talk about awards, box office numbers, chart positions, or streaming statistics. His answer comes without hesitation.
“First, I’d want people to remember me through my songs.” Then he pauses before naming the legacy that matters even more.

For an industry constantly searching for bigger personalities and louder reinventions, ALVN’s ambition feels remarkably grounded.
His career today is defined by a greater honesty and willingness to take risks than the version of himself who first arrived in Kuala Lumpur all those years ago.
If the last decade established Alvin Chong as a star, the next looks set to establish ALVN as an artist with far more to say.
