The rise of a new lead
31-year-old Malaysian actor Sky Iskandar was already an all-rounder before stepping into the spotlight. His debut role as Megat in the action flick Kahar: Kapla High Council brought him recognition following a stint in commercial modeling.
For two years, rejection became a constant companion in Sky’s life as he faced the disappointment of one botched audition after another. At the time, he was also a part-time barista, juggling assignments and classes while uncertainty lingered in the back of his mind as he tried to transition into acting.
“At that time, visibility depended on people’s recommendations, none of which I had, and I didn’t have enough work to back me up either.”
“I guess acting is the one that really struck gold for me. When I did it for the first time, I knew this was what I needed to do with my life, he added.
The emotional library of an actor
Sky shared that experiencing the ups and downs of life before his acting career helped ground him in his roles. He draws from a personal “library” of experiences that also shape his storytelling and outlook on life. Sky expressed that “acting and I are like a soul-level love.”
Amid the competitive nature of the industry, he continues to fall deeper in love with the craft through opportunities to collaborate with others.
“It constantly challenges me to step up my game and become not only a better actor but also a better person.”
Sky admitted that he was genuinely taken aback by the sheer level of commitment required in his craft, realizing that an actor’s devotion to a role goes far beyond the surface.
“The amount of time, dedication, research, and stamina that goes into serving a character requires patience, confidence, and a strong support system,” he said.
Finding balance
In a profession that demands physical awareness, he balances its pressures by taking breaks between takes and listening to his body. By setting these boundaries, he ensures that when he steps into frame, he’s offering his entire presence to the set.
“Learning to say no to some things is very important, whether it’s a difficult stunt or clashing schedules. I’d love to do everything, but I love it even more knowing I can give 110%.”
Despite constant rejection, Sky managed to find genuine fulfillment in the simplicity of a humble and routine life while working as a barista. “It taught me a lot of values I still carry today: being kind, resourceful, and understanding the importance of friendships and networks.”
He also believes in maintaining a supportive circle of friends and family, one that motivates and challenges him to grow. “It is important to keep that balance between ambition and staying rooted,” he said, ensuring that his feet remain planted in the midst of being recognized everywhere.
A vision for Malaysian cinema
When it comes to the narratives he feels most drawn to, he consistently emphasizes the importance of telling authentic, deeply rooted Malaysian stories that honor the country’s rich cultural heritage.
“I believe each tradition and country has its own uniqueness. Malaysia is no exception,” he said. “We have a plethora of stories from many angles that are yet to be told. My hope is for the world to resonate with and find relatability in our stories,” he added.
Sky Iskandar, still in the molding stage of his journey, hopes to achieve much more as a Malaysian actor.
“My hope is for people to know they, too, can achieve whatever they put their hearts and minds to, even if it seems impossible. Keep that dream alive, keep believing, put in the effort, and love what you do.”
