Meet August Rigo: The Hidden Genius Behind Your Favorite Songs

The Filipino-Canadian musician behind the stardom
You know his songs. You’ve heard his collaborations on the radio, on streaming platforms, and maybe even blaring from a speaker at your favorite club.
But the person behind the hit tracks—the one who writes the melodies, shapes the lyrics, and makes the magic happen behind closed doors—is someone you might not recognize, though you’re certainly familiar with his work.

Meet August Rigo, the multi-talented Filipino-Canadian who’s not just creating waves in the music industry but quietly revolutionizing the way we hear pop, R&B, and beyond.
For many artists, the seed of their creativity comes from a specific moment of inspiration. For this musician, however, it was the environment he grew up in.
“Music was a huge part of everyday life,” August reflects, noting that his Filipino household was steeped in sound—whether it was the crackling of radio stations, the spinning of vinyl records, or, of course, the ever-present karaoke sessions that defined family gatherings.

Style that matches the music
But it’s not just music where this artist stands out. His style is just as layered and intentional as his sound.
“If I was to sum up my personal style, there are two sides to it.” The first is an eclectic blend of streetwear with high-quality basics, a nod to both comfort and aesthetic.
The second? A style August humorously dubs “Dad-core”—functional wear that still exudes flair, perfect for days spent with kids and nights spent in the studio.
“It’s about keeping style at the forefront, but making sure it works for the day-to-day.” A balance of casual ease and thoughtfulness—much like his approach to music.
The challenges of being seen
As a Filipino-Canadian in the Western music industry, he’s faced both challenges and opportunities that come with being part of a historically underrepresented culture.
“I’ve been second-guessed, looked down upon, and rejected for the way I looked.”
But rather than succumbing to these obstacles, August channeled them as fuel to push himself to greater heights. “I’ve always felt that my skills should speak for themselves.”
This drive to prove himself has made him a humble yet confident collaborator—someone who’s quick to listen, but equally eager to take risks when the time is right.
Yet, he doesn’t view his Filipino heritage as a cause, but rather as a part of who he is.
“I champion being Filipino, but I don’t feel the need to be ‘good for a Filipino.’ I’m just good.”
His goal is simple: to be the best he can be, and in doing so, to pave the way for more Filipino creatives to rise to the top without being seen as ‘other.’ “I hope to be good enough that it opens the door for more artists like myself.”
If there’s one lesson August has learned over the years, it’s that the path to success is rarely linear.
“I started out wanting to be an R&B solo act, and now I’m writing for Korean artists,” he laughs.
His journey proves that success can come in unexpected forms, and it’s often the detours that lead to the most fulfilling destinations.
In the coming years, he’s determined to balance writing for global stars with releasing his own projects.
“There’s so much more music I want to share with the world, and this time, I want to be the voice behind it.”
