In ‘Spike For A Cause,’ Avel Bacudio Champions Local Craftsmanship and Athleticism
In support of the Philippines’ hosting of an international volleyball championship, the celebrated designer showcased custom pieces combining local textiles, tailoring, and sportswear
Spike in style
After dressing the Philippines’ finest Olympians and athletes in ‘Gintong Sinag,’ Avel Bacudio rallied behind Alas Pilipinas—the country’s national volleyball team—through ‘Spike for a Cause,’ a fashion show and fundraising event in support of the Philippines’ hosting of the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship.
Held at Foro de Intramuros, the evening also showcased Avel’s continuing partnership with the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Textile Research Institute, reworking and reimagining local fabrics through meticulous tailoring and contemporary silhouettes.
Through sports jackets with woven panels; cropped and sleeveless blazers; the barong as an undershirt, stitched with volleyball-inspired details; and vibrant patterns, the designer of champions demonstrates how Philippine textiles and motifs mesh seamlessly with the dynamism of sportswear and the precision of menswear.
Another standout detail is the usage of scarves, both in solid colors and intricate patterns, adding a sense of ease and flow against the structured jackets.
As Avel once said in a previous interview with VMAN Southeast Asia, his vision goes beyond fashion. Through his designs, he calls on everyone to rally behind the Philippines’ hardworking athletes—to stand by them through challenges and victories.
Avel proves once again that, in terms of combining and championing local craftsmanship and sports, he is an undisputed gold medalist.
