A Legend-Led Call to Action: Apl.de.Ap and Bamboo Reunite for ‘Why’
Two of the Philippines’ most influential musical icons join forces to deliver a soulful anthem for environmental resilience and social change
When two titans of Filipino music occupy the same space, it’s a movement. Over a decade after their chemistry first sparked as coaches on The Voice Philippines, global icon Apl.de.Ap and rock royalty Bamboo have reunited for their new single, “Why,” out now on all streaming platforms.
“Why” is a gritty, soul-stirring anthem designed to wake the world up to the urgent environmental and social realities facing the Philippines.

An ode to a classic
The track cleverly samples Stevie Wonder’s 1968 classic “I Don’t Know Why,” but replaces the Motown legend’s vocals with Bamboo’s signature rasp. The result is a sonic bridge between worlds: a mellow, rhythmic foundation injected with a sharp rock edge that feels uniquely Filipino.
As Bamboo’s chorus anchors the track, Apl.de.Ap delivers a series of searing verses. He doesn’t mince words, addressing the “lies and illusions” that cloud modern discourse and urging the youth to “realize what they doin’.” It is a lyrical plea for clarity and unity in a time of mounting crisis.
More than just lyrics
While many artists use their platform to raise awareness, Apl.de.Ap is moving beyond the recording booth to the soil itself. The Philippines remains one of the most vulnerable nations to the effects of climate change, enduring increasingly devastating floods and storms.
“I’m here to put my money where my mouth is,” Apl says.
“For me, that means using my influence and reach to push through our Food Forest program.”
The initiative is staggering in its ambition, aiming to plant 380 million trees, including coconut, coffee, cacao, and moringa, across the country. By working directly with local farmers, the program creates a natural flood defense system while providing sustainable livelihoods, turning environmental protection into an economic engine.
A shared vision for the sunrise
For Bamboo, joining the project was a natural extension of a shared brotherhood and a mutual ache for their homeland. While the lyrics reflect a sense of frustration, the ultimate takeaway is one of stubborn optimism.
“We know it’s not going to get easier, but we have to remain hopeful,” Bamboo explains. “To believe in the eventual sunrise for this nation.”
“Why” serves as a reminder that while the questions are difficult, the solution lies in collective action. By blending Apl’s global hip-hop influence with Bamboo’s localized rock soul, the duo has created a soundtrack for a new generation of Filipinos ready to “step up” and protect their future.
