Stepping out of his comfort zone
At first, the then 14-year-old Elyson De Dios was reluctant to enter the entertainment industry. Acting was never part of the original plan. His days revolved around school and basketball, a routine that felt safe and repetitive. With encouragement from his mother, he eventually chose to step outside of his comfort zone and audition.
“My mom encouraged me to join a reality television show. She told me this door might not open again, and she was right. I wanted to try new things because I was always playing basketball at school,” he said.
The transition from the hardwood basketball court to the glossy studio floor forced the soon-to-be artist to trade the hoop for the expression of human emotion.
Now 26, Elyson admits he is still navigating his path despite already building an acting career. By embracing his own uncertainties openly, he grounds himself with a clear purpose: he wants “to inspire people to live the way they want to, to do what makes sense for them.”
Nurturing the craft
As he continues to understand performance, he has learned that acting changes depending on the space. In front of the camera, control matters. On stage, expression expands. The adjustment excites and pushes him to discover different sides of himself as a performer.
When he starred in Sins of the Father, he developed a much deeper and profound appreciation for the action genre. “For me, I love action. I enjoy stunts and the grind behind it. I did stunts in my last television series. That’s where I thrive,” he said.
There was also a significant turning point in his early career where his journey in acting nearly came to a complete and permanent halt. At 17, Elyson decided to temporarily step away from the spotlight.
His father insisted that he finish school before fully pursuing his craft. “I stepped away, which made sense. Nothing was happening in my career, and I think I was burned out.
The pause became an essential point of reflection for Elyson. Away from the pressure of auditions and expectations, he was allowed to reassess what he truly wanted. He explored other interests, even trying hospitality and culinary courses, but a certain sense of fulfillment was always missing.
The hardwood to the spotlight
“I realized I really wanted to create art. I tried hospitality and culinary courses, but I didn’t really see myself there,” he said.
“The life lesson was clear: I’m an artist, and I need to follow that.”
Basketball once seemed like a possible long-term path, yet its biggest impact turned out to be internal. The discipline of training, learning to recover from losses, and enduring exhaustion shaped how he now approaches acting.
“Discipline from basketball taught me perseverance and how to handle burnout,” he said.
“The grind, the mentality, and striving for greatness, it’s the same in acting.”
“Late nights, challenging shoots, people yelling, it’s tough, just like in sports,” he added. The athlete mentality became part of his identity as a performer, informing both his preparation and his consistency on set.
Measuring success
Today, the restless artist is no longer wandering but evolving. He hopes that his legacy will be defined by sincerity. “I want people to associate my name with someone who creates, inspires, and stays true to their passion.
For Elyson de Dios, success is measured in how he continues to grow and remain honest to the work he feels deeply and instinctively called to pursue.
