Justin San Miguel Is Playing a Different Game
The former basketball hopeful is building a modeling career on his own terms, with his sights set on the international runway
- Justin turned an unexpected entry into modeling into opportunities with local designers and major runway productions.
- Balancing a real estate job with modeling, he hopes to represent Filipino talent on the international stage.
A different kind of court
Among hundreds of cover star hopefuls in the VMAN SEA Model Search, rising Filipino model Justin San Miguel earned his place as one of the five faces of the October digital cover, ticking off a milestone in a career built upon sacrifices.
Before the runway, Justin wanted to play basketball. It was the ambition he carried since childhood, but when his parents did not allow him to pursue varsity basketball in college, he redirected his focus toward a degree in Tourism, graduating in 2025.
A difficult family situation after graduation pushed him to become more independent. Modeling was never part of the plan, until a friend spotted his potential and taught him the basics of walking and posing in a single day.
The following day, Justin attended a casting for SAGA. He landed an e-commerce shoot for Oxygen, then auditioned for Francis Libiran, eventually making his runway debut at the Smart Araneta Coliseum alongside SB19. “I was extremely nervous, but I focused on doing my best,” he recalls.
The transition was unexpected, but the mindset behind it was familiar. Basketball had taught Justin to treat setbacks as part of the process, not a reason to walk away.
“I’ve always believed that life will put you through difficult situations to make you stronger,” he said.
Though his ambitions have shifted, the competitive instinct remains. Justin approaches modeling with the same drive he once brought to the court, measuring progress against his own standards rather than anyone else’s.
“I’ve always been competitive with myself… Whenever I get an opportunity, I give it my best,” he added.
Learning to work the room

He first got in front of the camera through his best friend’s local clothing brand, where he modeled for free because he enjoyed putting outfits together.
That interest started early. Before school, getting dressed could become an exercise in trial and error, much to his mother’s frustration.
“I remember my mother getting annoyed with me because I would take so long getting dressed, constantly changing outfits until I was happy with how I looked,” he recalled.
Turning that personal interest into professional work, however, required more than an eye for clothes. Initially shy, Justin had to learn how to introduce himself, build connections, and navigate an industry where relationships matter as much as the image in front of the camera.
“Over time, I realized that having the right attitude and being willing to learn are just as important as having the look.”
It is a lesson that continues to shape how he approaches each casting and collaboration. For Justin, developing as a model means staying open to criticism, learning from the people around him, and understanding that the work extends well beyond the final image.
Building a career beyond the camera
Modeling can be unpredictable, particularly for someone still establishing a foothold in the industry. Balance has made independence a practical necessity rather than an abstract ambition. It has also taught him that waiting for the right opportunity is rarely enough.
“Opportunities don’t always come when you expect them to, so you have to be proactive and create opportunities for yourself,” he said.
On the runway, he sees his role as more than presenting clothes. Each show offers a chance to translate a designer’s ideas into movement and presence, making the model an active part of the collection’s story.
“Knowing that a designer has chosen me from among so many models to bring their vision to life on the runway is something I truly appreciate,” he added.
Responsibility gives the work meaning beyond visibility. Every booking is another opportunity to sharpen his craft, earn trust, and establish himself in an industry where the next step is never guaranteed.
Taking the Filipino look global
Becoming one of VMAN SEA’s cover stars marks a significant milestone in Justin’s career. For someone who entered modeling almost by accident, the opportunity is a reminder of how far he has come, and how much further he wants to go.
“Looking back at where I started, I’m grateful for how far I’ve come, and this milestone motivates me to keep working toward even bigger opportunities,” he said.
His ambitions now extend beyond the local scene. Justin wants to take his career internationally and bring Filipino representation to a wider fashion audience, without losing sight of the identity that brought him here.
“My biggest goal is to take my career internationally and represent the Filipino look on a global stage,” he added.
“I want to show the world what Filipino talent can bring to the fashion industry while staying true to who I am and where I come from.”
His goal is personal, but it also reflects how he understands his own journey. Justin knows what it means to have an expected path disrupted and to build something new out of circumstances he did not choose.
“I’ve learned to turn difficult experiences into lessons instead of letting them define me,” he added
The international runway remains a destination rather than a guarantee, and Justin understands that getting there will take continued work. But his career has already proved that an unexpected detour can lead somewhere worth pursuing, and that changing direction does not mean abandoning the drive that started it all.
