Pada tahun 1965, sebuah syarikat Jepun melancarkan Manpo-kei, yang diterjemahkan sebagai \u201cmeter 10,000 langkah.\" Nama itu dipilih kerana aksara untuk 10,000 kelihatan seperti orang yang sedang berjalan, bukannya disebabkan oleh kajian klinikal.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Selama beberapa dekad, angka sebarangan ini menjadi standard emas untuk penjejak kecergasan dan aplikasi kesihatan di seluruh dunia. Oleh kerana ia adalah nombor yang bulat dan menarik, ia mudah diterima pakai oleh agensi kesihatan awam yang mencari cara mudah untuk menggalakkan pergerakan. Ia menyediakan sasaran yang jelas dan boleh diukur untuk populasi yang kurang aktif.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Walau bagaimanapun, berpegang teguh pada angka ini boleh mengecewakan ramai orang. Penyelidikan yang diterbitkan dalam <em>JAMA Internal Medicine<\/em> mendapati bahawa wanita warga emas melihat penurunan ketara dalam kadar kematian pada hanya 4,400 langkah. Manfaat tersebut terus meningkat sebelum mendatar sekitar 7,500 langkah.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Bagi kebanyakan orang, peningkatan kesihatan yang paling besar berlaku apabila beralih daripada gaya hidup sedentari kepada gaya hidup yang aktif secara sederhana. Menambah walaupun 2,000 langkah kepada asas harian yang rendah boleh meningkatkan kesihatan kardiovaskular secara ketara. Anda tidak semestinya perlu mencapai lima digit untuk melihat impak besar pada kesejahteraan anda.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Selain itu, intensiti langkah tersebut memainkan peranan penting dalam kecergasan. Berjalan pantas selama 30 minit selalunya boleh memberikan lebih banyak manfaat kesihatan jantung berbanding berjalan santai yang perlahan selama berjam-jam.
